Nearly two years ago I wrote about Civil War Veteran, Alfred Samuel Shull: Kansas Jayhawker. Click the link to read about Alfred’s life in Bloody Kansas, an area so volatile, it became a flashpoint for the Civil War.

Last month I was excited to journey to the area of Southwest Missouri where Alfred and the Shull children settled after his first wife, Elizabeth, died. During my visit, I connected with the local historian at the Strafford Historical and Preservation Society, who shared an old Strafford Mercantile Account Book with me.

Mercantile Register for Alfred Shull
McAdoo Mercantile Ledger, October 3-4, 1895.
Alfred Shull purchased 2 lard cans, coffee, oil, and an oil can for $1.10.

Alfred Shull passed away in December, just two months after the visit to the Mercantile. He was buried in the Danforth Cemetery near his home.

Alfred Shull Obituary
Alfred Shull, an old citizen living three miles southeast of town, died suddenly Monday night of last week of heart disease. Mr. Shull was in town that day apparently as well as usual.clipped from The Springfield News-Leader Springfield, Missouri, 25 Dec 1895.

The Shull’s burial lot takes up a large area around Alfred’s headstone, where ground depressions give the appearance of other burials. Unfortunately, the original cemetery records were lost nearly a century ago and headstones either weren’t placed or were destroyed, so we can not be sure of the identities of other family members buried nearby.

    1. You are tireless with your posts–what an inspiration!

PS: Do you enter your data only into Ancestry, or do you also use FamilySearch or other websites?

    1. Hi Doug,
I apologize for the delay. I am realizing that I get notified for new posters, but am not notified for repeat posters. I will fix that notification problem going forward.

To answer your question…I keep my main tree in Family Tree Maker on my computer which is synced with an Ancestry.com tree. I have found Ancestry to be the best site to connect with cousins and conduct research due to their large DNA database. I supplement this with MANY additional research sites, including FamilySearch, for records. I also have Y and mtDNA kits on the FTDNA site. FamilySearch uses a “one world” tree format for family trees, which I contribute to but would never use as my main tree, because there are too many people who make ignorant changes without any substantiation.

I hope this answered your questions. Feel free to email me with additional questions!

      Best,
      Michelle
